Does the character count include spaces and emoji?
Yes to spaces — the counter reports characters with and without spaces separately, because a tweet or SMS limit counts them. Emoji are trickier: many count as two or more characters under the hood (a flag emoji can be 8), and platforms disagree on how they charge for them. The counter shows the actual code-unit length so you can see what a strict limit will measure.
Should I track a limit by words or by characters?
It depends on where the text goes. Social posts, meta descriptions and SMS enforce character limits, so count characters. Essays, articles and assignments are usually briefed in words. The word counter and character counter run on the same input, so you can watch both at once.
