NATO Phonetic Alphabet to Text
What is NATO Phonetic Alphabet to Text
This tool reverses the NATO phonetic alphabet: paste the code words and it gives you the plain text back. Alpha becomes A, Bravo becomes B, Charlie becomes C, and number words like One and Two become their digits. It is handy when someone has spelled something out to you phonetically and you want the letters written down.
How to use
- Type or paste the code words in the input box.
- Separate letters with spaces and words with a slash.
- Read the decoded text as it updates instantly.
- Click Copy to grab the result.
When to use it
Someone read you a code as "Sierra Oscar Sierra" and you want it as plain letters? Paste it here and you get SOS. It also helps when transcribing a recorded radio call, checking a colleague's spelling of a serial number, or making sense of notes full of Alpha, Bravo and Charlie.
Frequently asked questions
How should I separate words?
Put a single space between the code words of one word and a slash (/) between separate words. For example, "Hotel India / Bravo Yankee Echo" decodes to HI BYE.
Is it case-sensitive?
No. Alpha, alpha and ALPHA all decode to A. Common alternate spellings also work, so Alfa is read as A and Juliet as J, and X-ray, Xray and XRAY all give X.
What happens to words it does not recognise?
Any token that is not a valid code word is shown as a question mark, so you can quickly spot a typo in the input.
Can I convert text into NATO phonetic instead?
Yes. Use the companion Text to NATO Phonetic tool, linked just below the converter.
Can I share this tool with my inputs pre-filled?
Yes. The URL updates automatically as you type. Copy it from the address bar or use the Share button, and anyone who opens the link will see your exact input ready to go.
