What is VAT Calculator

A VAT calculator works out value-added tax (or any percentage sales tax) on a price. It runs in two directions: add VAT to a tax-exclusive net price to reach the gross price a customer pays, or remove VAT from a tax-inclusive gross price to see the net figure and how much of the total is tax.

How to use

  1. Pick a direction: "Add VAT" for a net price, or "Remove VAT" for a price that already includes tax.
  2. Type the amount into the price field.
  3. Enter the VAT rate as a percentage, for example 20.
  4. Read the net, VAT amount and gross total, updated as you type.

When to use it

Quoting a client and need the price with tax? Switch to Add VAT, enter a 100 net price at 20%, and you get 20 in VAT and a 120 total. Got a 120 receipt and need the tax figure for your books? Switch to Remove VAT and the same 20% splits it back into 100 net and 20 tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the rate. At 20%, a net price of 100 has 20 in VAT, so the gross price is 120. The calculator does this when you choose Add VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, a gross price of 120 divided by 1.20 gives a net of 100, so the VAT was 20. Choose Remove VAT to do it automatically.

Does this work for any sales tax, not just VAT?

Yes. The rate field takes any percentage, so it works for VAT, GST, or a local sales tax. Just enter the rate that applies to you.
