What is Fuel Cost Calculator

A fuel cost calculator estimates how much you will spend on fuel for a trip. Enter the distance, your vehicle's fuel economy and the current fuel price, and it returns the fuel you will burn, the total cost and the cost per mile or kilometer. It works with MPG, km/L and liters per 100 km, so it fits how cars are rated wherever you drive.

How to use

  1. Pick your fuel economy unit: MPG, km/L or L/100 km.
  2. Enter the trip distance.
  3. Enter your car's fuel economy.
  4. Enter the price per gallon or liter.
  5. Read the fuel needed, total cost and cost per unit of distance.

When to use it

Planning a 300 mile road trip and wondering what fuel will cost? If your car does 30 MPG and fuel is $3.50 a gallon, enter those three numbers and you get 10 gallons and $35 for the drive. Useful for budgeting a commute, splitting a road trip with friends, or comparing two routes before you leave.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?

Work out the fuel used from the distance and your economy, then multiply by the price per unit. This calculator does it for you in any of the three common economy units, so you only enter distance, economy and price.

What is the difference between MPG, km/L and L/100 km?

MPG (miles per gallon) and km/L (kilometers per liter) measure distance per unit of fuel, so higher is better. L/100 km measures fuel per fixed distance, so lower is better. Pick the one printed on your car or used in your country.

Does it account for round trips?

It uses the distance you enter, so for a round trip just enter the full there-and-back distance. Everything else stays the same.
