Roman numerals are the numbering system used in ancient Rome, built from seven letters: I, V, X, L, C, D, and M. This tool takes any whole number from 1 to 3999 and converts it to the correct Roman numeral, applying the subtractive notation rules that give us IV instead of IIII and IX instead of VIIII.

How to use

  1. Type a whole number between 1 and 3999 into the input field.
  2. Read the Roman numeral in the result field as it updates.

When to use it

Need a year in Roman numerals for a ring engraving, a tattoo, or an invitation? Type 2026 and you get MMXXVI, ready to hand straight to the engraver with no working out the letters by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no Roman numeral for zero?

The Romans did not use a symbol for zero in everyday counting. Roman numerals were built for tallying and trade, where a quantity of nothing rarely needed its own symbol, so the system starts at 1.

What is the largest number I can convert here?

This tool supports 1 through 3999. Standard Roman numerals cap out at MMMCMXCIX (3999) because a fourth M would need a symbol larger than M, which classical notation does not define.

Why is 4 written as IV instead of IIII?

Subtractive notation was adopted to keep numerals shorter: placing a smaller symbol before a larger one means subtract it, so IV is 5 minus 1. IIII (four I symbols) still appears on some clock faces for visual balance, but IV is the standard form.

Where are Roman numerals still used today?

Clock faces, movie sequels and copyright years, Super Bowl numbering, monarch and pope names (Elizabeth II, Leo XIV), and outline numbering in formal documents.

Can I share this tool with my inputs pre-filled?
